The Magic Flute 2.0 By Wolfgang A. Mozart
- New version/text by Andreas Mitisek
Synopsis
Act 1
Tamino nearly gets erased by a tornado. Three corporate drones save him—employees of the Queen of the Night, CEO of Crude Petroleum, LLC. A chicken vendor named Papageno shows up, making things up as he goes. The Queen's daughter Pamina has gone AWOL. Suspect: Sarastro, now running a wellness racket. Tamino gets recruited to rescue her. Papageno gets drafted as sidekick. Neither asks the important questions. So it goes.
At “Sarastro’s Ashram”, Monostatos—a man with relationship issues, currently employed as Fitness Coach—is after Pamina, who'd rather eat glass. Rescue attempts fail. Sarastro catches everyone and spouts wisdom-babble instead of pressing charges. Tamino meets Pamina. Love at first sight with inconvenient timing. Sarastro convinces both men to endure "spiritual warrior trials" to find their "perfect mates." They sign up without reading the fine print. Americans never do.
Act 2
Trials begin: magic drinks, vow of silence, rotating cast of Exec Secretaries and PIs dispensing warnings of dubious value. Monostatos has a blistering revelation and quits. Pamina misreads Tamino's silence as rejection and contemplates suicide. The PIs talk her off the ledge. Tamino endures a fire-walk—another man suffering to prove his manhood and to get Pamina. Papageno spirals into the black hole of hopelessness before stumbling onto the hidden power of surprise.
Everything wraps up with songs about eternal love, everyone conveniently forgetting suicide attempts, vengeful mothers, and cult trials. This kind of magical story can only happen in opera, where reality takes a vacation. So it goes.
